Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

March 9, 2006
INSHORE - The snook fishing has picked up this week around the bridges, Turning Basin and around the docks along the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Jumbo live shrimp have been the bait of choice, but a 2oz. Flair Hawk fished around the bridges has been very productive too. I had reports of quite a few snook over the 34 inch slot limit. Trout anglers are staying busy along the edges of the flats with plenty of trout in the 1 to 3 pound range. The trout have been feeding on live shrimp. The bottom fishermen are also staying busy with sheepshead, sandperch, black drum and a few bluefish. Try the catwalks of the South Bridge.
OFFSHORE - The reports have been good when the sea conditions let the boats go out. This week the bottom fishing has been the best with snapper to 10 pounds and grouper to 40 pounds being reported coming from over the reefs and wrecks. The Northeast Grounds seemed to be the place to be. I also had several nice cobia reported out around the 60 foot mark. The dolphin action has been scattered at best -- try in 160 to 200 feet of water to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Still some kingfish, bonita and sharks from 60 to 90 feet of water. Along the beaches and over the shallow reefs you can look for plenty of sheepshead, croakers, weakfish and a few pompano.
TEEN ANGLERS - This Sunday -- March 12th is the next inshore tournament for the local chapter of Teen Anglers. Teens will need to be at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce by 6:45am. If you would like more info on Teen Anglers just go to the web at www.teenanglers.org
BRAGGING BOARD - Cammie Ward caught a 3 & 1/2 pound mangrove snapper while fishing in the Ft. Pierce Inlet. She was using a large live shrimp.
