Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

March 16, 2006
INSHORE - The fishing has been good despite all the wind. Look for the trout around the spoil islands to the north of the North Bridge. The best bait to use this week has been a green and red cottee jig. There has been some redfish reported along the dock lines of St. Lucie Village and they were taking live shrimp. As for the snook -- select size shrimp fished around the Turning Basin and bridges has been hard to beat. The prime time to fish has been between 3:00am and daylight. There are still plenty of sandperch, sheepshead and black drum around the catwalks of the South Bridge. We did catch some pompano, spanish mackerel, jacks and ladyfish along the channel edges of the Intercoastal. Try using a shrimp on a 1/4 oz. jig head -- works every time.
OFFSHORE - Sloppy sea conditions most of this week have made the fishing offshore tough. But, for the bigger boats the reports were of good grouper and snapper being caught around the Northeast Grounds. Cut bait has been working as good as live baits. Look for a few cobia around the wrecks. The dolphin have been scattered in 160 to 180 feet of water to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. If it a kingfish you are looking for then try in 60 to 90 feet of water. Try both to the North and South of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. The only problem is that there has been plenty of small sharks and cuda's to steal your bait. The reefs that are closer to the beaches have been holding a lot of sheepshead, weakfish and sea bass. Also a few pompano have been up in the surf and along the beaches.
TEEN ANGLERS - The regular monthly inshore fishing tournament for the local chapter of Teen Anglers was held this past Sunday at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. In the middle school division 1st place went to James Robinson of Northport Middle School. 2nd place went to Luis Hernandez -- also of Northport and 3rd went to his brother, Michael Hernandez from Lincoln Park Academy. In the high school division only one teen weighed in an eligible fish and that was Mike Maxwell of Westwood High. His fish was also the biggest fish of the tournament. The next scheduled inshore tournament will be on April 9th at Jaycee Park at 6:45am. For more info on Teen Anglers just go to the web at www.teenanglers.org
BRAGGING BOARD -- Savannah Ward, age 5 & 1/2 caught her 1st pompano on Sunday. It weighed 3 pounds. Wayne Wilson limited out on snook on Tuesday just before dark. He was fishing in the Turning Basin and using shrimp for bait. Dave Collingwood caught a 9 & 1/4 pound Bermuda Chub while fishing in the Ft. Pierce Inlet. He was using a live shrimp. Cammie Ward caught a 4 lb. sheepshead on Tuesday afternoon. She was using live shrimp.
