Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

March 30, 2006
INSHORE - Now that the wind has changed direction and slowed down some the reports are coming in about the good bite in the river. The trout have been in 2 to 4 feet of water around places like the Midway Road area, up at Round Island and up on the Mooring Flats. Try a soft plastic bait or a live shrimp fished under a popping cork. The redfish have lock jaw this week but anglers are reporting that they have seen plenty of fish but they are not eating much. Only a few fish have been caught and they were at the docks along South Indian River Drive. Look for plenty of sheepshead and small snapper along the channel edges. There has been scattered pompano reported around the river as well as some spanish mackerel. The snook bite has improved with Wednesday being the best day so far. There were a good number of reports about the slot size snook coming from around the Turning Basin and both the North and South Bridges. Large live shrimp has worked the best.
OFFSHORE - With the sea conditions improving so has the fishing. Look for dolphin to 20 pounds in 160 to 200 feet of water. The kings have been in the 60 to 90 foot range and look for a cobia or two in that same area. The bottom fishing over the reefs and wrecks has been good for snapper, grouper and sharks, Also, plenty of big jacks. Along the beaches you can look for schools of jacks, bluefish and spanish mackerel.
TEEN ANGLERS - The next monthly inshore fishing tournament for the local chapter of Teen Anglers will be held on Sunday, April 9th, at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. If you would like to donate your time to Teen Anglers or just want more info go to the website at www.teenanglers.org
