Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
April 5, 2006
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

April 5, 2006

INSHORE - The fishing and water conditions have improved this week as the wind has finally laid down. The trout bite has been the best that I've seen in months with fish to 10 pounds being reported. Try fishing soft plastic baits around the Spoil Islands to the north of the North Bridge. The snook action has also improved around the bridges in Ft. Pierce and also in the Ft. Pierce Inlet for anglers using live shrimp. Try your luck for a redfish along the docks of Indian River Drive. There is still plenty of small snapper and grouper along the channel edges. The sheepshead bite has slowed some but there has still been some good size fish being reported. The pompano and spanish mackerel have been scattered all around the river with the bait of choice being small live shrimp.

OFFSHORE - Things are starting to improve again as the wind lays down as do the seas thus making it easier for the smaller boats to get offshore. The reports of a good dolphin bite starting in 160 feet of water and on out to 300 feet. The kingfish action has been good in 60 to 90 feet of water to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Slow trolling a live bait has been the way to go. Also, look for a cobia or two in that same range as the kings. There were several fish in the 30 to 40 pound range reported. The bottom fishing for snapper and grouper over the reefs and wrecks has been good with snapper to 10 pounds being reported and grouper to 30 pounds. If it is light tackle action you want -- the beach is full of spanish mackerel, bluefish and big jacks from the Inlet south to the power plant. They have been feeding on just about anything you throw at them.

TEEN ANGLERS - There is a monthly inshore fishing tournament this Sunday, April 9th, at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. This will be the last tournament before the championship which is scheduled for May 7th. If you would like more info on Teen Anglers or would like volunteer your time just go to the web at www.teenanglers.org

I would just like to say Happy Birthday to Kaitlyn Ward who will be 1 year old on the 6th. Grandpa loves you!
