Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
February 6, 2000
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

SNOOK! SNOOK! SNOOK! That is the way snook season started off in the Ft. Pierce area this past week. By the end of the week it has slowed down and the weather conditions were making it hard to even go and fish on the jetty or the catwalk of the south bridge.

The hot spots for snook action were on the jetty at the Ft. Pierce Inlet, the North bridge and the Turning Basin. There were quite a few snook caught on the jetty using live shrimp and fishing on the ocean side of the jetty. On one charter I had this week we got our limit of snook in the Turning Basin and we were fishing with pinfish. Our best snook weighed in a 16 1/2 pounds. No monster snook were caught this past week. Most of them were in the 12 to 18 pound range.

Snapper, sheephead and black drum are still biting on a regular basis with shrimp as the bait of choice. The best place for snapper is at the docks at the City Marina. Sheephead and black drum are along the wall behind the library.

There were several good reports of trout being caught on the flats. On Tuesday my charter caught their limit of trout to 6 pounds on the flats at Harbor Branch. We were using live shrimp and a popping cork. There was also trout caught at the Moorings in Vero Beach, both Big Mud & Little Mud Creeks, and on the flats around the north bridge.
