Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
May 7, 2000
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

The inshore fishing has been good this past week even with the winds that we have had. All you had to do was find a spot out of the wind so you could cast your pole and wait on the fish. There was plenty of good snapper, trout, sheephead, jacks, a few redfish and also a few nice catches of snook.

SNAPPER - The snapper have been all over the river and were ready to take your bait. The best places this past week were the docks at the City Marina and at both bridges. The snapper were feeding on live medium size shrimp and the bite was pretty much any time during the day.

TROUT - The trout have been here in full force with good catches reported on both the north and south flats and also up around the Moorings in Vero Beach. The best time for the trout was at first light and again just before dark. One angler reported that he caught 5 trout on a mirro-lure. The other bait of choice was the good old pooping cork with a large live shrimp attached.

REDFISH - The redifsh were to the south in the river on the flats. On Wednesday my anglers had 3 redfish that were keepers and 5 more that we returned to the water so they could grow a little more.

SNOOK - The snook were a hit and miss thing this week. If you were in the right spot at the right time you got your snook. The Jetty at the Ft. Pierce Inlet gave up a few nice snook this past week with one going to 15 pounds. The snook at the Jetty were caught on a troll-rite hook and live shrimp. There were also snook taken from the north bridge and the Turning Basin. On Saturday morning one angler on my boat had 2 nice snook to 15 pounds and his wife lost a monster while we were fishing in the Turning Basin. We were using live pigfish.

JACKS - The jacks are every where you cast in the river and the Inlet. If you want a good fighting fish this is the one for you. We caught jacks this past week from 5 to 29 pounds.

Until next week, Good fishing.
