Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

The trout fishing has been just about as good as it gets with the trout being taken both to the North and to the South of Ft. Pierce. To the north it was at Harbor Branch, Round Island and at the Moorings. To the south it was at Big Mud Creek. Last Sunday I took my wife, Cammie, trout fishing and she got her limit of trout in 1 hour at Harbor Branch. She was using large live shrimp and a popping cork. Her fish went to 4 pounds. Today I took Dorcas Griffis from Edgefield, S.C. and she caught her first trout. Dorcas had 2 trout to 3 pounds and lost a monster. She also had fun fighting with the jacks she caught. We were fishing to the south around Big Mud Creek.
TARPON - We saw quite a few tarpon rolling around the Big Mud Creek area. Day break has been the best time to land these fish and live mullet seems to be the bait of choice.
SNAPPER - The snapper action has remained good at both bridges. Live shrimp are working best.
SURF - If you were able to fish between the afternoon showers then you were one of the anglers that got a pompano. They were hiting just after the afternoon rain storms we have been having. The usual catches of sand perch, whiting and blue fish were reported.
NEW TROUT LAWS START JULY 1St, 2000
On Saturday July 1, spotted seatrout fishermen statewide must comply with the new, more streamline trout regulations. There is now a statewide 15-inch minimum and a 20-inch maximum, with one fish over 20 inches allowed. And rather that three confusing zones, there are only two. The South Region (south of the Pinellas/Pasco County line on the Gulf Coast and south of the Volusia/Flagler County line on the Atlantic side) has a four fish per person bag limit and a November and December closed season. The North region (north of these boundaries on both coasts) has a five fish per person bag limit and a February clouser.
Until next week, Good Fishing
