Haulover Inlet - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing is starting to heat up as we approach winter. The bait has been showing up and the predators have not been far behind. There have been a wide variety of species to catch over the past few weeks.
Towards the beginning of November we have been catching sailfish, mahi, skipjack tunas, and kingfish while using live baits suspended from kites and flatlines. Further inshore there have been some Spanish and cero mackerel around. Anchored on the first reef with a chum bag out has been producing mutton snapper, big porgys, yellowtail snappers, and trigger fish.
On the deeper ship wrecks the black groupers have been best I've seen or heard of in years. A friend of mine caught four groupers up to 52lbs yesterday which is unheard of in these waters. I think Hurricane Irma has had a lot to do with this by churning the water up over the past couple months. Aside from the big black groupers being around there have also been plenty of trophy sized golden amberjacks, red snapper, cobia, and a few warsaw groupers on the scene.
I was able to do one Bahama Wahoo tournament this past month on board the Day Sea. It was a charity event for Lymphoma and Leukemia. They raised over $100k for the foundation. What a great event and a good cause to help people in need. The fishing was very slow in the tournament but we managed to catch 129lbs. of wahoo to seal up first place aggregate, heaviest fish, and top female angler.
Inshore fishing has been producing snook, tarpon, jack crevalle, lady fish, and barracudas.
