Bulldog Fishin inshore report

Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Last weekend gave anglers a taste of Spring. The nice weather stayed through mid week until another front moved in and cooled things off again. The water temperature got up to 72 degrees in some areas and the fish were on the move and actively feeding. Red fish, black drum, and mangrove snapper were all pulling drag.
The black drum took first prize last week.Target the deeper cuts and channels for these bruisers. I use a 1/8 ounce jig head with a smaller hook. A #2 hook with a split shot will also do the trick. Take shrimp and break them in half. The smaller pieces on the hook are easily picked up by the fish. This also leaves a scent trail. Take a handful of of shrimp and cut them into smaller pieces to chum the target area. I use a "bait bat" to toss the chum because they really get the chum out there.
The red fish were on the oyster bars near mangrove shore lines. I was seeing pods of reds in schools of 5 - 15 fish. Cut mullet was the hot bait. Make long cast the to the oyster bars. Approach the area quietly and only get as close to the area as you have to. A good indicator that the fish will be there is that you will see mullet jumping as you approach.
We had another jolt of cold weather late this week which might push the fish back into hiding. It all depends on how much the water temperature drops. Spring is just around the corner and the fish is going to be fantastic. Remember anglers that trout season opens March 1st (Monday).

Good luck out there and tight lines!
