Fall Fishing Action

Capt. Josh Fritz
October 9, 2015
Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fall fishing is finally here for Florida, the weather is great not to hot any more, cool mornings and evenings making it very enjoyable for boating and fishing. With the cooling of the Gulf waters the inshore fishing action is exploding with awesome fishing action. Red fish are in huge schools roaming the shallow waters from Hudson to Chassahowitzka. Look for these bronze bombers around the inner islands and mangrove shore lines, mullet schools are a good way to find red fish. Keep casting distance away from the school and be as quite as possible a big school can spook on you if you are loud. Live bait and lures are working but live bait has the best action with red fish. My go to live bait right now a green backs. Red fish are feeding best on a incoming tide or high outgoing tide. Most of the red fish are ranging from 22 to 30 inches.

Trout are working there way back into the shallow grass flats in 2 to 4 feet of water. Lures are the way to go, mirr o dines 17MR in the 808 color are a great search bait and very effective. Top water plugs are also getting hammered. I like to use a spook Jr in the bone color or a rapala skitter walk SW08 in the silver trout color or white color. Look for kelp beds the trout will hang around that as well.

Snook action is unreal right now, we are catching a lot of snook on every trip from small snook to monster snook 20 to 35 inches. Live bait is the best way to go. Green backs will get them fired right up.

Spanish mackerel are getting very thick in the deeper flats 8 to 10 feet of water. A 1/4 ounce jig head and a white gulp shrimp is deadly for a mackerel just work the jig on a fast retrieve

Shallow water grouper action is on FIRE.. We are catching our limit on just about every trip out, target water depth of 6 to 12 feet around rocks, and live bottom. Frozen bait is producing a faster bite but lures are working great as well. Rapala Cd 14 mags in fire tiger color, mullet, red and white, and orange and red are working great. Casting or trolling these plugs works very good.

Book your trip of a life time ASAP dates fill up fast don't miss out. Also stop into Precision Tackle located in Spring Hill FL, in the Well Care plaza Dave has everything you need for fishing plus some really cool paddle boards, mud motors and boats. Be sure to tell Dave that Capt. Josh sent you in.
