Great Fishing But Trout Season Is Closed

Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Chase N' Tails Fishing Charters

Capt. Josh Fritz

January was a great month for fishing along the Nature Coast. The trout bite was the best action we had with red fish taken second. Trout are in deeper depressions around the back creeks and coves with rocky muddy bottom with a depth of 2 to 6 feet. Trout are taking a wide variety of baits from live shrimp to white jerk baits. I would recommend for lures is a Mirr O Dine in the (808) color has produce the best catch or a white jerk bait I like a 4/0 wide gap weedless hook. Rigging the bait weedless will give it more action and you will not get hung up on the rocky and oyster beds. Trout have been in the upper slot and well over 17-25", just remember trout season closes in February along the Nature Coast.

Red fish are starting to school up in Numbers of 3-6, if you can get out early in the morning on a low tide the reds have been tailing all over the place making for some exciting action. The best way to target the tailing reds is with a live shrimp on a 1/0 circle hook and light leader, 20lb test is perfect. Make a long cast past the red fish and reel the bait back towards the fish very slow so you don't spook them, then hold on. Or a white or new penny jerk bait rig weedless will get the reds attention as well. Red fish are around mangroves, oyster bars, and shallow grass bottom.

If you would like some fast action we have bluefish out a little deeper 6-10 feet look around structure like rocks, and tripods. Top water lures are really fun to use to catch bluefish, a Rapala Skitter Walk (SW08) color really does not matter just work the www.chasentailsfishingcharters.webs.comlure at a normal speed.

Me and 3 other pro fishing captains along the Nature Coast has put together a NEW website called Florida Fish Talk you can sign up and become a member, post fishing reports in your area, read reports in other areas, post fish pics, videos and a hole lot more check out the website and become a member.
