Hot July Fishing And Scalloping

Capt. Josh Fritz
July 16, 2012
Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hot July Action

July is going great for both fishing and scalloping. Fishing the deeper grass flats from 8 to 12 feet is very productive with monster trout, sea bass, mackerel, black tip sharks, and a few flounder. The way I like to fish the deeper flats is with a jig, use a 1/4 ounce mission fishin jig head with a white or new penny 3" gulp shrimp bouncing slowly on the bottom will produce great action. Some big sea bass are coming to the boat in the 11 to 15" range on daily trips. Mackerel are hanging around the bait pods that are offshore use the same jig just work it faster for the macks. Inshore the red fish are slow right now we are catching some but the big schools will show up in September, target the outside points and islands with rocky bottom / oyster beds, live bait is the way to go. Pin fish and green backs are my top choice. Free line the baits around mullet schools and the reds will find it.

Scalloping is great right now, we are finding the best amount of scallops in 5 to 8 feet of water. Make sure you fly the divers down flag so other boaters know divers are in the water. Stop into Precision Tackle for all your scalloping and fishing needs Dave will show the hot lure and were the fish are biting
