Old Man Winter Fishing Action

Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Old Man Winter Fishing Action

Hernando Beach Fl

Capt. Josh Fritz

Anglers and recent charters are having a ball catching a wide variety of game fish right now. Red fish are schooling up in schools of 4 to 12 per school, target areas from Aripeka to Chassahowitzka around rocky/oyster shore lines, points with good water flow, inside creeks and coves. Find the mullet find the reds is the best way to describe it. Live bait and lures are doing well with the red fish, live jumbo shrimp, fresh cut mullet and pin fish are all working great. Lures such as top water rapala skitter walks SW08 in the white, mullet, and bone color and mirr o dines 17MR in the 808 and 50 color are doing great as well just work the lures at a slow speed. Trout are holding in the back coves with a deeper depression, live shrimp rigged with a 2/0 circle hook is the best for live bait, and the same lures as I mention above will work great for the trout as well. Sheepshead and black drum are holding close to springs and pot holes live shrimp and fiddler crabs with a 1/0 hook is the ticket. Offshore the Spanish mackerel are in 8 to 12 feet on spotty bottom a 1/4 ounce jig head with a white gulp shrimp or white mirr o lure lil jon is the way to go. Remember during the winter months when using lures work the slow slow slow, with the water temparture dropping the fish can be sluggish not wanting to move very far for a meal not like spring action. So the slower the better, at times with top water lures I will stop the lure on the retrieve for a second or two it works give it a try on your next fishing trip. Stop into Precision Tackle located in Spring Hill on U.S 19 for all your fishing needs.
