Spring Fishing Action

Capt. Josh Fritz
February 17, 2018
Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hernando Beach fishing report.

Spring is definitely in the air and the fish are getting very active. With the gulf waters heating up we will see the migration of Spanish mackerel and cobia showing up very soon. Bait pods are here all ready and game fish are ready to eat.

Redfish are roaming the outside points, islands and creek mouths target them on a incoming tide or first part of the outgoing tide. Live bait is my go to for steady action. Live green backs and pin fish rigged with a 2/0 circle hook and 25 pound leader is all you need. Look for the mullet schools the reds will be close by.

Trout action is good in 1 to 4 feet along grass flats and limestone bottom. Top water plugs and mirr o lure 17mr are great search baits. Fishing shallow 2 foot of less a seedless soft plastic is hard to beat. I like to fish moving water for trout incoming or outgoing tide.

Snook are showing there selfs and chewing good on live bait. March 1st is the season opener for snook season remember it's one fish per person 28" to 33". Incoming tide has produced the best action.

Keep your eye out for cobia and macks we should start seeing them very soon.

Book your charter ASAP we have two 24 foot skiffs to accommodate your party
