Spring fishing in Hernando Beach Florida

Capt. Frank Bourgeois
March 30, 2014
Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing the nature coast of Florida has had its ups and down. Many cold fronts have affected the fishing here. We were on a big Spanish mackerel bite then they slowed down. The mackerel drove the sea trout into hiding. We caught sea trout but only the bigger ones and they had bite marks on them. Now the baitfish has returned and I am hoping this will turn on the spring bite. Large catches of gag grouper also have been caught and released in the shallow water. We still have to travel forty miles to catch keeper red grouper. The red grouper like to eat pinfish at this time of year. We usually stop and catch some before we head out. Redfish are coming in and out of there winter haunts allowing us to catch them on slow moving baits. Butterfly pinfish are usually the trick to catch them. Fly fishermen are slamming many fish with match the hatch small whitebait imitations.
