Summer Fishing and Scalloping

Capt. Josh Fritz

Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hernando Fishing Report

Summer heat is here in Florida but the fishing is great. On recent charters my clients have been targeting red fish, snook, gag grouper, cobia, grunts, and mangrove snapper. I will start with red fish, reds are roaming the outer islands and mangrove shorelines. Live bait is the ticket green backs or pin fish are my go to live baits. A early morning incoming or high outgoing has been the best bite. Snook are holding in the same areas and deep holes along points live green backs are the way to go. Shallow water gag grouper has been good we are targeting these fish in 10 to 12 on rocks and ledges, live bait has produced great action and dead bait works great also. Frozen thread fins and Boston mackerel are my go to frozen baits. A knocker rig with 50 to 80 pound leader and a 5/0 circle hook works great for dead and live bait. Cobia are around the same areas and wrecks chum and chum some more for cobia this time of year be patient give a spot a good hour.

Scallop season starts July 1st book your charter asap. Stop into Precision tackle for all your fishing needs.
