Winter Time Fishing

Capt. Josh Fritz
December 9, 2015
Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Winter fishing action is in full swing. Black drum are thick in the back waters holes and close to springs. Live or dead shrimp is the ticket for them, I use a 1/0 circle hook and 20 pound leader about 3 feet long. Depending on the water depth and current you may need a small split shot for weight. Red fish are holding along the oyster bars and mangroves. Look for mullet schools and nervous water, set up casting distance away and use live jumbo shrimp or pin fish for bait. A incoming tide has been the best action for red fish the last few days. Trout are holding in the shallow grass flats and back coves looking for warmer water. Live shrimp or pin fish under a cork is great or using lures can for some fast action. White flukes rigged on a 1/8 ounce jig head or an watermelon red little john on a 1/8 ounce jig head is working great.
