Winter Time Fishing

Capt. Josh Fritz
January 15, 2016
Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Inshore fishing action is great right now, in the back country waters the red fish are holding around creeks, and back bays with muddy and rocky bottom. The mud and rocks will hold heat so the fish love to sit in these areas in the winter months. Live shrimp. fresh cut mullet or lady fish is the way to go, Incoming tide has been the best action for reds in the last week. Trout are all over the shallow flats, A incoming or outgoing tide is producing a great trout bite. Soft plastic have been the way to go White or water melon Saltwater Assassins rigged with a 3/0 to 4/0 worm hook for a weed less bait or a 1/8 ounce jig head for popping across the bottom works great on high water. Top water plugs are producing some big gator trout rapala skitter walks in the sw08 in white and mullet color have been great on early morning or over cast conditions. Black drum are around springs, pot holes, and muddy bottom live or dead shrimp is the way to go. Out deep on the grouper rocks we got great grunt fishing and monster sheepshead out there. Live or dead shrimp with a small split shot for the sheepshead.
