Winter Time Fishing

Capt. Josh Fritz
January 28, 2016
Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Inshore fishing is great right now with the winter fishing patterns in full swing. Red fish are holing in the back bays and creeks around muddy/rocky bottoms live bait works great right now we are using live shrimp, fresh cut lady fish and mullet fish the high outgoing for best action. Soft plastics are working great as well, the Saltwater Assassins products of soft baits are very good in a wide verity of styles and colors. The reds are crushing the Lit'l Tapper in Gold/Red glitter, Watermelon Red, and Good Penny rig it with a 1/16 to 1/8 ounce Assassin jig head with a loop knot for great action. Also the Saltwater Shad 5" rigged with a 4/0 weed less hook in colors White, Watermelon Red, Chicken On A Chain, and Sun Gill are very good colors to use right now.

Sea trout are holding in the back bays and out front by the mouths of creeks with a deep cuts soft plastics and hard body lures are working great. The Saltwater Shads 5" rigged the same way for reds as I mention above with a 4/0 weed less hook in White, Watermelon Red are producing a bunch of big gator trout. Hard body lures such as the Mirr O lure 17mrs in the 808, and 50 colors are my go to baits.

Sheep head are all over the rock piles in 10 to 20 feet of water, live or dead shrimp for bait. Rig up a 2 foot ling piece of 20 pound leader with a 1/0 bait savor hook, pinch off the head and tail thread the hook into the shrimp you want to hide the hook, and a small split shot about 15 inches above the hook.

Stop into Precision Tackle for all the Saltwater Assassins soft plastics and jig heads Dave has a huge verity of colors and styles to choose from and at a great price $5.00 a pack.
