Winter Time Fishing

Capt. Josh Fritz
January 12, 2017
Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Winter fishing action is in full swing. Red fish are stacked in the back bays and near by creeks close to Springs or muddy/rocky bottom. Live or dead jumbo shrimp rigged with a 20 pound leader and 1/0 circle hook is my preferred method. Incoming tide is producing the best action with reds. Size ranging from 16 to 25 inches.

Speckled trout are holding in the same areas as reds and in deeper bays close to Springs. Live shrimp under a popping cork is the way to go. Black drum are in the same area as well dead old shrimp with a 1/0 bait hook just letting the shrimp soak on the bottom for these guys is the way to go. Incoming and first of the outgoing going tide is working great.

Offshore the BIG sheepshead are holding on the rocks. Dead shrimp rigged with a 3 foot section of 25 pound leader and a 1X bait hook and a split shot is all you need. Grunts and sea bass are also hanging with the sheepies.

Book your trip asap dates fill up fast.
