Winter Fishing in Homosassa
First, we'd like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Holiday season, FELIZ NAVIDAD! Despite the unpredictable weather, fronts, fog, winds and cooler temperatures we continue to catch a variety of species including Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Bluefish, and Sheepshead. The crystal clear inshore waters that arrive with the change of season are ideal for hunting Redfish and Trout that have settled into potholes and the deeper parts of the numerous creeks that will serve as their winter feeding stations. The best method of fishing these deeper areas are with a slower retrieve as the fish tend to be a little more lethargic with the cooler water temperatures. December is also when the Sheepshead start to school up for their winter spawning. Sheepshead will be located in the inner holes will lots of structure and rocks. Live shrimp is the best bait for these great fighting and excellent table fare fish.
I continue to be a true believer of the BANANNA superstition and prefer not to have anything to do with bananas on my boat at anytime! Please, don't even wear any "Fruit of the Loom" undergarments!! On a recent charter with Tony Nowicki from New Port Richey, Ross Porter, John and Doug Jackson from Lakeland the banana CURSE struck again. The day started real good as John caught a 19 inch Trout in a backwater creek where I normally only catch Redfish. As the tide was going out we moved to an outside edge of a mangrove island and Ross managed to put a keeper Redfish in the cooler. We were running out of water fast so we decided to drift the lush grass flats south of Chassahowitzka Point. This is when Tony decided to eat his banana which I had no idea was on the boat. Well we didn't catch another fish for a couple of hours and that's when I noticed Doug in the back of the boat throwing the other three bananas from their cooler overboard! It didn't take long for the bite to turn on again and we did add three nice Trout and a Spanish Mackerel to the cooler. Notice in the picture Tony is the only one not holding a fish and the only one that ate a BANANA!!!
