Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Today's fishing trip started at 1230 AM, I met up with a buddy to go gig some sheepshead and was surprised to see Snook after Snook after Snook in Little Homosassa so we broke out some glow in the dark jerk baits and started catching big trout and Red Fish. It was a beautiful night, no wind to speak of and not tooo cold. We ended the night portion of our trip around 3 and went home to get some rest with a dozen sheeps and and two trout and two reds that we kept. Then around 9 I headed back out to see if I could find some reds out on the flats. I ran across a school of about 50 Reds on my way out of Little River and ended up fishing a spring on the flats while I waited for the school I found to calm down. At that pit stop, I caught 8 Sheepshead, threw them all back and saw a big black drum. Then I went back in to where I had seen the original school and couldn't find them, ended up running towards St Martins River or "Salt River" and started seeing school after school of Reds, all of mixed sizes, from Bulls to Rats AND tons of slots....:grin:grin:grin I tried about 6 different baits before I got it right, all they would touch was GULP shrimp on 1/16 ounce mission fishin jig heads. Cast in front of the school by at least 15 feet and work your bait very very slow. They are not pushed up on the banks like normal, but off the bank by 30-150 feet, that could be because the tide was low, or they were moving around but, thats what they were doing today. I saw over 1K Reds and caught 12 in 2 hours of fishing. Not very many trout in the day time though. Not to bad for a windy day!

Homosassa Fishing Forecast:

The Red Fish will be biting strong over the next few weeks and will continue to school up.

Target Species:

Red Fish Trout Sheepshead
