Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report
Scallop fever has attacked Homosassa! Scallops, scallops, and more scallops, this time of the year it's all about scalloping in Old Homosassa!! If you're a good swimmer and know how to snorkel getting your limit of scallops has not been a problem. The limit is two gallons (in the shell), per person per day and up to ten gallons per boat per day.
That's a ton of scallops and the beginning of a delicious feast; check our Recipe Page at www.HomosassaRedfish.com, for some great ways to prepare your catch. We've been finding these dollops of goodness in 5 to 7 feet of water either North of the Homosassa River channel and West of the St. Martin Keys or South, off of Chassahowitzka Point. Look for the flotilla of boats and you'll know where to start swimming. Please be safe, aware, careful and stay close to your boat as it's a total zoo out there especially on the weekends. Though they are a little deeper then last year they are definitely bigger for so early in the season. This year's season has been extended two weeks and ends on September 25th. We have many clients that return year after year and as we are already booked for most of this season call soon, 352-382-3939, to check on availability. We are doing two scallop charters per day, the morning charters are from 7 to 11AM, and the afternoon charters are from Noon to 4PM. This is a great way to cool off from the summertime heat and an awesome family activity for all ages that will create memories that will last a lifetime. Believe it or not even with all the swimmers in the water Speckled Sea Trout continue to be caught on the pristine flats South of Chassahowitzka Point in about 5 to 7 feet of water. Try to get away from the flotilla of boats and toss a Berkley Gulp behind a Cajun Thunder and you can still find hungry schools of fish. Mixed in with the Trout are keeper Sea Bass that will also eat a gulp. We've also been getting reports of Trout eating whole Pinfish in the basin at the mouth of the Little Homosassa River. Being on the water at sunrise before all the boat traffic is definitely a plus. Is there anything better then being on the water at sunrise? Many of our clients enjoy spending half a day Redfishing and the other half of the day Scalloping.
I prefer to Redfish on an incoming tide and then Scallop on the outgoing or low tide. Ideal conditions are to start the day Redfishing and then cool off in the afternoon Scalloping. The Redfish continue to feed on live Shrimp, cut or whole Pinfish, or slabs of Mullet or Ladyfish. Toss your bait up towards a shoreline into the rocks or oyster bars and wait for the "Bronze Bruisers" to explode and create havoc on the water. We're catching many Reds over the 27 inch slot limit and that is a fight that will burn your bicep! Plus there's nothing at all wrong with a Redfish fillet on the grill covered with Scallops!!
