Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

I had the afternoon off so I called up one of my buddies and hit the flats to see what we could find. We rode around looking for some reds and trout, trying to see if the weather from the past few days affected the fishing. We saw what looked like snook blowing up on green backs out on one of the out side islands so we slowed down and eased up on the spot. I tied on a couple of MiroDine XLs and started casting around the area. The island had a nice ledge and with the afternoon out going tide, there was a nice rip coming off of it. The first few casts produced some nice trout, then my buddy hooked up with a red, and as he was fighting it I saw the snook chasing bait 50 feet of the front of the boat, so I casted in front of the Snook and it was game on! My little stradic 2500 was screaming as the snook made his first run out toward the gulf, I turned him after about 2 minutes of drag screaming action, only to have him run right back toward the island and try to tangle up me up in the mangroves. After an exciting 8 minute battle I was able to bring the snook boat side and my buddy got him in the net. After some pics we went back to the spot and caught a few more nice trout for dinner and headed home. There is all kinds of action out there along the nature coast, so take advantage of the good weather we are having and get the heck out there! And yes I kept the snook, I only keep one every year, I love the way they taste but find them more valuable in the water than on the dinner table.
