Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Friday before Super Bowl Weekend, Dave Motz and other company executives came
to Homosassa’s Riverside Resort for some rest and relaxation. And of course, a fishing
tournament was on the agenda. It all began on Thursday night at the “Tarpon Room”
upstairs in the old Yardarm AKA Charlie’s Crab House Restaurant on the Homosassa
River. Dave me to join in on the fun for an “Original Cracker Dinner” consisting of
Hearts of Palms Salad with Lime Sherbert Dressing, Fried Alligator Meat, Fresh Fried
Catfish, Roast Loin of Pork, Roast Duck, Wild Rice, Cheese Grits, Black Eye Peas with
Chopped Onions, Cornbread and Muffins, Baked Cinnamon Apples and for desert Bread
Pudding. The food was very good and the service was excellent. The fishing tournament
rules were simple, most fish and biggest. Sheepshead took it all and my good friend,
Capt. John Bazo and party beat Dave and I by a few pounds in both categories. They
had a basket full of nice sheepies. We caught a slew of them ourselves and thought we
had won. I knew I was in some kind of trouble when Bazo was grinning from ear to ear
as he docked the boat. Since that trip, the water has warmed up to 69 degrees in the bay.
There are rumors that some really big trout are ganging up along the shallows. Of course
you know the season is closed in February and that means you can catch them, but you
can not keep them. By March 1, trout anglers will be ready to bring home the bacon. Fly
fishing has been my thing lately. I had the pleasure of taking out a master guide from the
state of Maine, who was a very good angler. Although the water was a little too chilly for
redfish action, he managed to catch several trout and a grouper on the fly rod. We looked
for redfish, but the tide, water temperature and wind was not right. The sun was up but
there was this terrible glare on the water and the water level was just too low. Just
yesterday another fly fishing party came aboard, a married couple this time. This guy
brings a GPS on my boat and has it around his neck. I let it play with it all day long and
even let him have a couple of numbers. He just moved here and he needed a little help.
I’m getting too soft. His wife caught the first trout and a pretty nice one for a fly rod
caught fish. Later on we got into a hole and both Charley and Ellen caught a dozen gag
grouper and broke off a couple. It was a warm and a fairly calm afternoon. The fishing
was good. If you really like fishing and want to continue having a place to fish and fish
to catch, I urge you to join Coastal Conservation Association. This non-profit lobbying
group does more good for salt water anglers resources than any other group in the
country. For more information log on to: http://www.cca-florida.com/
