Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
February 26, 2001
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spring is finally here. Homosassa's fishing action has improved dramatically. Finally, enough water has come in with the last new moon phase for redfish action. The west winds also help to bring push in more water and baitfish.

The flats are alive with thousands of little pinfish which is a good bait for both redfish and sea trout.

Pat Burchard and her daughter Sue and husband John caught their limit of one redfish each during a recent outing with me. Live shrimp was used for bait.

The sheepshead action is still good and plenty have been brought into the docks of MacRae's in Homosassa.

Grouper action has picked up offshore in 50 feet of water and closer in. However, the shallow water fishery has not turned on yet. Water temperature is around 67 degrees off shore and that is still a little chilly.

Hosted by The Tampa Tribune's outdoors editor Frank Sargeant, this event features continuous seminars on topics from bass, tarpon, mackarel, snook and grouper fishing to whitetail deer, wild hog and turkey hunting.

Continuous seminars on two stages with some of the nation’s top outdoors experts plus feature hosts at the famous Hawg Trough live bass aquarium and the Mercury Marine Casting Pond attract customers from all over the state. The Coleman Camping and Polaris Test Drive Areas allow you to check out the latest products for these companies.

Casting contests, fly-rod instruction, a castnet how-to, an archery range, rock-climbing, in-line skating, kayaking and "virtual" fishing keep customers at the Expo all day long. And the popular kids’ fishing derbies, hosted by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission and sponsored by Bass Pro Shops, keep the whole family happy.

Remember to watch The Tampa Tribune for more information. The Expo program, featuring a complete list of seminars, exhibitors, activities and information will be published in The Tribune, Thursday, March 1."(By Frank Sargeant)
