Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear

Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Group Lands Variety on The Fly

Last weekend we left from Riverside Resort with 8 anglers headed up by Adam Adams. The Sewannee Flyfishers were in four guided boats that included Capt. Bill Fitzsimmons, Capt. John Bazo, Capt Jim Long and myself.

The flyfishing only group landed over 10 species of fish including trout, redfish, grouper, key west grunt, black seabass, bluefish and mackerel, to name a few.. Capt. Long had his guys wading for reds while Bazo landed several nice trout in the 20 inch range on his custom tied clousers. My guys caught about a dozen grouper to 20 inches..

The Jimmy Austin party at the Homosassa Fishing Club employed a dozen guides and caught their limits of redfish to 27 inches. Capt. Bruce Williams won honors for the largest redfish. Capt. Charlie Harris won honors for the largest trout at 19 inches. A large tarpon was hooked near the fish cleaning table by Capt. Jim Long. Long handed over the rod to a client and later the fish wore through the leader.

Some interesting articles about Homosassa hit the newsstands recently. The December issue of Fly Fishermen has world record holder Jim Hammond Jr. telling about his record 202.5 pound tarpon. He was guided by Capt. Steve Kilpatrick of Chiefland. Capt. John Bazo is featured in the October issue of Florida Sportsman where he gives up the secrets to catching skinny water grouper.

Pro-Line Boats has come out with what I think is the perfect bay boat. Models in the 20 and 22 foot range can be seen at Riverhaven Marina. I drove both models and they do ride really nice. The shallow draft will allow the boat to be the perfect all-around fishing craft. Tours of the plant to see how the boats are built are offered throughout the week by appointment. Call 795-4111.

By the way I am thinking about trading up to one of those bay boats and if you know anyone who is interested in a real nice 18 foot flats skiff, mine is for sale. The boat is in mint condition and has many features.

Remember if you are too busy to go fishing you are just too darn busy!
