Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing on Florida’s Nature Coast on the Homosassa Bay was excellent since my last report. The following catches were performed while being guided by me. On October 9, Craig Suarez with Bill Moore and son caught 10 nice spotted sea trout. The Duke Lane Jr. party caught a pile of trout the first day and their limits of redfish on the second day of Oct. 11-12.
The Edward Spearman party from Atlanta caught dozens of redfish which were released except for a couple for a shore dinner. Carter Smith from Atlanta invited a group of guys and caught numerous trout on Oct 15-16.
Things slowed way down for me with long time client Madeline Boyd and her nephew Mike and friend Helen. Only a few fish were caught that day. Things changed the next day with John Lecker and David Goldman who landed our limits of 15 trout by 12:55 pm. Another pretty good half day with 7 trout to18 inches by Andy Levine and Owen Whitman on Sunday, October 21.
Bill and Marcie Buck of St. Louis landed 4 nice trout and several other fish on a half day charter last Monday.
To make up for fishing last Sunday, I took our pastor, Alan Ritter and our Awanas commissioner, Troy Allen out for a fishing trip this past Wednesday. The weather was perfect and the water temperature was still a little warm for the BIG grouper to move in to the shallow water. Anyway, they reeled in a lot of SMALL fish including grouper to 20 inches. They caught trout, Spanish mackerel, Key West grunts and black sea bass.
Already mad because he had to throw back a perfectly good-sized grouper, the preacher landed a 28 inch cobia which gave him a fair tussle on the light line. He was double mad when I said, “He is a real nice fish but he has to go back.” The size limit is 37 inches overall. Oh well, at least he got his line stretched.
I got to go out on a 29 foot Donzi with 2-250 HP Mercury EFI’s and wow! That boat does go fast! We passed everything except the gas pumps! The Daytona model is a real eye catcher and a super fun boat for the super rich! That leaves most of us out!
We were off to Busch Gardens with the family on Friday and that was ok. A Father has to do that stuff.
I begged off fishing Sat-Sun as a 20-25 mph northwester came in and dropped our air temperature about 30 degrees. Fished with a fly rod for a little while up the river before giving it up.
By mid week the catching should resume. Looks like we got some pleasant temperatures to fish early this week. The tides are really low now and everyone needs to pay close attention to staying in the channel and watch the draft. There are some really bad rocks out there that will ruin your day if you hit them going too fast. Slow down, take it easy and have some fun! Most of all, be careful. Have a Nice Day!
