Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Homosassa Mercury Dealer Takes Off to Go Fishing
Fishing the Homosassa flats has been close to perfect. I was fortunate enough to take out my Mercury Motor outboard dealer, Skip Turvaville of Gulf Coast Marine in Homosassa. His cousin, Jimmy Turvaville from Tallahassee/Mexico Beach was along for the ride as well. Skip invited a couple of hunting buddies to come along for the ride named Gail and Benjie.
Our quarry was redfish and I stalked the fish by sight as the day was clear with the sun overhead. I got pretty excited when I saw about 3 dozen of the bronze beauties silversiding in the clear shallow water.
Both Gail and Benjie produced a double hook up right away with a free-lined shrimp. It was non-stop action for a while. Jimmy hooked up several as well.
All in all about 25 reds were released with 5 fish kept that were all in the 6-7 pound range. They really had a great time according to Skip. As for Skip, he pretty much stayed out of everyone's way, but at his friends' urging, he got in on the action and caught the last redfish of the day. I will let you tell him about the professional overruns. Skip needs to go fishing more as he was a little rusty.
Folks, if any of you ever need the best outboard repair service or a new or slightly used Mercury, Gulf Coast Marine has the best deals in the state of Florida. Call Skip or Linda at 352-628-5885.
I have a 2001 135 HP with low hours that I will make someone a super deal wanting a standard 20 inch shaft. These motors burn 40% less fuel compared to the standard versions.
Back to the fishing, Larry Davis of Albany, GA brought his son Ben who is 15, I think and a great kid. Both Ben and his Dad were so excited for the trip. Anything that surfaced, they were exclaiming, "Did you see that!! A turtle and a big one, right there!!
Larry played with his fly rod all day and caught his first grouper on the fly. Also, some ladyfish provided great action. Larry ties his own flies and made his own custom fly box. Pretty cool, I thought.
Ben landed a nice keeper grouper of about 7 pounds and 24 inches long plus six more that were too short to keep. They were real fun for him while casting a plug.
Ben also caught a nice size spotted sea trout of about 20 inches. Our last stop produced several nice redfish for Ben. I hope these guys come back because they were a blast to fish with. They made me feel like a youth again.
We may try some snorkeling the next time they come down, mixed in with the fishing.
Remember, if you are too busy to go fishing you are just too darn busy!
