Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Changes in Latitudes & Attitudes

Although a front is bearing down on Homosassa and winds are near 20 mph from the southwest, I am very happy that I will not attempt to fish today. Why? Because I am spending the day with my daughter, Courtney who is an avid fisher lady, but now wants to learn to shoot a shotgun.

We have a found a brand spanking new place to shoot clay targets. Now mind you, I can do just fine on my own, but I want the best for my daughter, so we are going to have some professional coaches tutor her. I am not even going to tell you where this place is either, cause it is right now the best kept secret in the world. That is mean of me, I know.

As I am letting my daughter sleep in a bit, I will tell you about the greatest day so far this year and for the entire winter. Fishing could have not been much better for my clients Mike and Brandon Terrell and Carol from upstate New York. These folks I liked from the start, as they are country folks even more so than myself.

These folks were so cool that Brandon later told me as we wet our first line that he picked me off the Internet as the number one web site in Homosassa. That made me feels great! Brandon is maybe 12-13 years old at the most. He has been fishing since he was 3. I also told them that even though that was pressure to perform, I assured them that this would be a day that they would remember.

Since I had not been out fishing in a coon’s age, I was as excited as the Terrells’. Upon arriving at MacRae’s dock a few minutes after 11:00 o’clock for a half-day charter, they greeted me and we introduced ourselves to each other with a handshake.

First thing Carol said to me was we are going to catch some fish aren’t we? I quickly answered with a smile, if you know how to hook them, you will. I quickly grabbed a hundred shrimp and couple bags of ice as they brought on board a chalked full cooler of silver bullets and the greatest sandwiches in the southeast from Publix Deli.

On the way down the river, I began explaining it was 12:00 somewhere in the world and I was going to eat my Cuban sandwich. Mike said ole well then I better get me a bullet. I handed him an insulated coozie can holder.

Well, folks, daylight is near, so in closing the following species were caught by the Terrells’. Many keeper size spotted sea trout,(all released) 4 redfish, several grouper, sea bass, flounder, porgies and sheepshead. For those of you who know me, the code word for this month and next is “mud.”

One more note for you grouper digger trollers. The bite is on. However, I would NOT venture out today. I saw a limit catch for 5 anglers come into MacRae's last night. That is 25 grouper up to 10 pounds.

More to follow later on this feeding-frenzy. The cold front will mess up the muds, however, they will return by mid-week. One more thing, before I sign off. It might be a good day to watch some TV.

One of our local Homosassa Guide Association Captains, Billy Henderson has hit it big on a national broadcast with the popular and well-liked Shaw Grisby of Gainesville.

Henderson guided Grisby for two days last August using Storm lures in the backcountry of the Nature Coast. The show airs twice, once today on TNN at high noon and on Sunday at 11:00 am. Grisby landed over 30 redfish each day using surface lures. Henderson is fast becoming the great and notable guide he has always dreamed of being. Shaw is gifted with being one of the kindest TV personalities in the world. He is a regular guy and does not let fame go to his head. He is the real deal and many anglers cherish his abilities to communicate the sport of fishing to our great country.

Have a nice weekend and be safe. Please take a little more time to get to your destination and use patience. Whether you are in a car or on the water, be cool, be happy-don’t worry, and please be courteous. Leave your attitude behind from wherever you received it. Show someone today a kind gesture. Hug your kid, call your Mom, get your wife a flower, remember the women in your life, go shopping and by her a present.

Beyond all thoughts, thank Him for your blessings. Calmness of the mind is awesome as the sun comes over the horizon. While you are at please pray for our President and military folks, they need peace of mind and a shield from the evil ones who desire to take our freedom away. Amen.
