Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
July 2, 2003
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Coe Lands a Large Homosassa Tarpon

For Mike Coe, a 74 year old Yale Professor, things could not be better. Well almost ļ

Coe successfully caught his first redfish on the fly rod. Catching redfish on the fly has not proved to be an easy task on Homosassa waters. However, by changing flies constantly we found one that worked. The choice fly turned out to be a little popper in bronze and gold in color that Coe purchased from Nature coast Fly shop in Crystal River.

The first cast into the dirty red rain water produced a strike from a hungry redfish; however it missed the fly when it struck the surface bug. It was our last spot that produced the nice redfish you see on the right side of your screen.

What really topped the whole trip was Mike¡¦s fly caught tarpon the last day of his 5 day stay. We had plenty of shots each day but never could really get the one we wanted until about noon yesterday.

A string of three swam by close to the bow of the boat and Mike laid a roll cast of 25 feet with one swoop of the fly rod. Mike worked his fly perfectly until the large tarpon ate the fly in Kodak color. The MTF-JHW 25 custom Lawyer tied fly in yellow was hooked in the top lip of the poon. An Owner hook in 4/0 SSW worked well.

The tarpon came around both sides of the boat while hooked before jettisoning 200 yards of backing in short order. After 5 minutes of chasing the fish and regaining the fly line, Mike worked the 100 pound tarpon to the rod tip and purposely broke the class tippet.

Even though the season is nearly over for tarpon in Homosassa, I am looking for a few good or willing anglers to try their luck here. I have a few days open this month. The cost to book a trip is $450 all day (8 hours) or $400 for 6 hours or $350 for 4 hours. Everything is included for the trip and this special is one for one or to anglers maximum.

Why don¡¦t you give me a call at home at 352-628-4207 and leave me your phone number and I will call you back. There are some fish here and if you see this today, the 3rd or 4th are great days to try for a tarpon on the fly.

I am off to Lakeland to have one of trolling motors worked on; to keep up with my equipment; a day off means fixing what is broke.

Take a day off and go fishing.
