Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
September 9, 2003
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

While most eyes and ears were watching Bay News 9 and tracking the tropical storm that was suppose to hit Homosassa this past weekend, my troops came to fish. The slow moving storm had everyone worried, me included.

With overcast skies and the threat of rain, a plan of was in effect with Jack Glass from the Atlanta/Homosassa Fishing Club for a family outing. My assignment from Jack was to take his wife, Priscilla, and their daughter Crosby and husband Brad. Last year Priscilla landed a 33-inch 13-pound redfish and the memory of that fish has haunted Jack ever since. Priscilla has a picture of the fish in their bedroom. Imagine that.

At the club dock, Jack explained that I would be the handicap boat taking two women and one male novice, while Jack and his daughter and her husband would be the A pro fishing team with Charlie. He dubbed us the "D" string. We were not going to take this brow beating sitting down.

Folks, I have to tell you we really got into the redfish before the day were out. Priscilla started the group out by catching three redfish, and then Crosby landed one. All Brad had caught at that point was a puffer. Then we hit the honey hole and every cast for about 20 minutes a nice 5 or 6 pound redfish was caught and released. We caught about 15 when Charlie called to say he was into some big reds to come on over.

It was there that the redfish action was the best the Glass party had ever experienced. Both boats’ entire crews were reeling in the redfish at the same time and some were over 10 pounds. Matter of fact Jack caught a bigger redfish than Priscilla’s. The new family record is a whopping 34 inches and 14 pounds. Well, Jack now has his dignity back. He can display his photo on the kitchen stove for Priscilla to squint at.

We were about the only boats out because of the threats of the storm. It was a perfect day and the perfect storm because the storm never reached us. Just some overcast conditions which made the day feel like the Fall season. I guess we reeled in and released 65-70 redfish between the two boats. This was a super day!
