Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Deer Hunting A family Tradition

While I truly love fishing, hunting also plays an important role in our family life as Florida crackers. Each year, both my son and I look forward to all facets of hunting that our area offers. A few select places are left natural where a person can hunt and shoot wild game.

Because I was planning a week long deer hunting trip to Georgia, I wanted John, age 13, to go hunting locally and perhaps bag a rack buck. Thanks to a good friend and my relatives, my son’s dream was about to come true.

The 8-point buck trotted along a game trail checking some scrapes at about 8:00 am on doe weekend of modern gun season. My son was positioned on the ground near the edge of the deer trail. When the big buck smelled John, he froze and snorted and retreated to the opposite direction very quickly.

With gun raised the deer stopped for a second; about 15 yards away and he looked back. Capowwwwlll!! The shot rang through out the woods. Blue smoke blew out quickly from the gun. The deer jumped as though it was hit.

A clean shot was made and when John and his first cousin came upon the deer, John was very proud. John got his wall hanger. For a Florida deer this is a real beauty and it would make any Cracker happy to bag this16-inch spread 8 pointer.

Now I knew I could go hunting without feeling bad about leaving my son home. He has school anyway and his good grades reflect that he does not cut school too often to go hunting like his old Dad used to do.

Because of some close friends here at home I was able to go away and hunt with them and we all brought home some meat for the freezer.

Deer hunting for my son is over for the season. He is content. He must now work to pay for the taxidermist charges.

Now I face even a greater honor and challenge. My daughter who is now 15 has recently asked me to go hunting. I was really surprised and happy that she wants to try hunting.

Each Thanksgiving we always go dove hunting after the big meal. This is where my kids and I will be; next to a hay bail or sitting next to a barb wire fence waiting for the birds to fly overhead. Her hunters education will start there and then we attend a state certified program later on when we can find one.

Oh, I almost forgot the fishing has been really good. With the warm weather all inshore species have been chewing it up. Limits of trout and redfish are attainable.

Have a Wonderful Thanksgiving and Eat Well!
