Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Adventures With Mike Locklear and Henry Morris-Part 2
Part 2- Mexico Bass Fishing- Day 1
After a good hot dinner and a hot shower Henry Morris and I fell asleep. It was not a real relaxing sleep the whole night ordeal. We were both excited and I was awake before the cook brought over our hot coffee at 5:00 am.
Omar our host for the trip who speaks great English, explained to us to have our gear put out on the front porch of our house before we walked the 100 yard trail to the breakfast buffet. A pick up truck would take our gear down the mountain before us.
After a hearty breakfast with scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, biscuits, gravy and fresh squeezed orange juice we went back to the house for last minute rituals, then was beckoned to come on; the bus was waiting for us.
Our group consisting of Jerry and Tim from Mississippi and Matt and Jeff from Michigan Including Henry and I were first timers to Mexico largemouth bass fishing. So when we boarded the bus, we were quick to realize we were holding up the show.
Everyone onboard was all right with that. After all it was still black dark out. We lumbered and rolled side to side as the driver went down the rock road with comments about pumping the brakes as it was apparent that the cliffs we were skirting were several hundred feet deep.
We passed a power plant that was at the lake bottom and beside a large dam that we crossed and went below and to dam’s back side to the boat landing. Dawn had broke as we stepped foot off the bus.
The crew was very professional with our gear and knew who’s to give first and who’s to give out last. They seemed to do this in concert with the line-up of the boats.
I remember this because my gear was the last off with Henry’s and this suited me to the tee. Our boat was also about the last one to leave.
The air temperature was near the low 50’s and with the wind chill of the boat we were feeling like 30. I had no problem facing to the stern with Henry as we made our way down the lake.
As the light became a little more intense, I could see through our guide’s ski mask a thick black moustache which is very traditional in some parts of Mexico. I could not help to think of bandits as I eyeballed Juan Jacobo briefly. Later when Juan began singing beautifully in Spanish I knew he was a good guy.
Bass fishing was something Henry and I needed to get use to again. We both have fished for smaller large mouths years ago, but to catch a really big bass, this was to be the focus thought with every cast. It took some getting use to and after a while our guide showed us the proper way to work our worms and lizards. I really felt like a greenhorn.
Before lunch Henry and I landed 17 bass up to 3 pounds. A great shore lunch consisted of fresh fish, French fries, rice, beans and salsa with bread filled us up and made us ready to go back out without much rest the first day. We caught 18 more bass that day and I landed a 7 and 8 pound bass as my biggest fish. Henry had a good first day, but not size wise. He did catch his share though.
Upon arrival to the landing, Omar is waiting with his clipboard and pen in hand asking how many bass and how big was the biggest and what we caught most of them on.
Here are some highlights below from our first day of fishing with some of the guys in our camp. We had a total of 17 fishermen with 9 boats. A total of just under 500 bass were released by us.
