Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report
This past week fishing continued to improve as water temperatures jumped up several degrees thanks to warm southwest winds and sunny days. The southwest winds also help drive in bait fish that the predator fish follow. This favorable pattern held up throughout the weekend giving folks a beautiful time to catch some fish and enjoy some sunshine with low humidity.
Bill Fehn of Chattanooga brought his wife Debbie and Dad Al for an all day fishing trip with me. They landed almost everything in the gulf including the undesirables like both types of catfish; hardhead and gaffs top. jack crevalle, bluefish, mackerel, redfish, sheepshead, trout, two types of sharks; bonnet head and black tip, and ladyfish. Al who is 84 years young had a good time with a 3 foot long remora and caught a keeper trout. Al and Bill both had several good fights with bluefish before getting cut off by the sharp teeth.
A 22 pound cobia was landed by a client of Mike Schilden of Atlanta named Jim. We hunted for a big fish for about an hour when we saw it following a sting ray in four feet of water. Several casts were made and it was hooked several times before bringing it in using 10 pound test line. It was a long 45 minutes before Jim got it close enough to the boat for me to net it.
Mike Schilden’s guest landed plenty of Spanish mackerel and some spotted sea trout.
A cold front just swept through the area yesterday and today to bring pleasant temperatures and low humidity. This scenario has to end soon as summer is just around the corner.
A few river tarpon have been spotted and the big gulf herd is due in soon. The late cold fronts could have an effect on the timely arrival of the migratory fish.
