Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
September 16, 2004
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hurricane Ally

The latter half of August and most of September has been a disaster for the guide business. There were many cancellations due the triple hurricane threat. As I write, a fourth hurricane is projected to hit near here. We were spared any real loss at my home, just without power for 54 hours.

I have a recent testimonial from a trip for those who are brave enough to come out and fish in post-hurricane conditions. I introduce you to a very good friend and angler, John Maddox Jr., who is by trade a land sales director for Advantis. For the best service in Atlanta, he can be reached at [email protected] He is also good friends with Fish Hawk Fly Shop owner, Gary Merriman of Atlanta who has been open for 30 years. Check out his web site at thefishhawk.com/

Maddox wrote "On September 12th I was able to get down to Homosassa for my family's annual fishing trip. I always try to get a day out with Capt. Mike by myself to sight fish for Bull Reds. I was trying out a new 7 foot one piece light weight spinning rod by G-Loomis with titanium guides that Gary of the Fish Hawk loaned me. The rod cast beautifully with the fast tip and the sensitivity was superb! We covered a lot of territory poling out on the flats catching a few loner reds with the spoon. Later we switched to the fly rod and watched about about a five pound red inhale a fly pattern called the gummy minnow. Just like every year before, Capt. Mike found the pod of Bulls and the action got hot. The highlight of the day occurred when I had lost three reds in a row on the Johnson ½ oz. gold spoon and finally got a solid hookup. The 12+ lb. fish was the largest I had ever caught on the Homosassa flats. Looking forward to springtime and joining Capt. Mike on the flats in search of the giant Silver King Tarpon."

Fishing always improves after a hurricane, so with three or four in a row, the fishing might just get to be fantastic. Right now times are tough on a lot of people from the paths of the hurricanes. My family has fared well.

I am teaching on September 21, a salt water fishing workshop. If you are interested read on to sign up.

Citrus County Parks and Recreation and Capt. Mike Locklear will offer a three-hour Saltwater Fishing Workshop. Below is a memo from the CCPR.

The first workshop will take place on Tuesday, September 21, 2004, from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the Homosassa Lions Club. The cost is $25.00 per person. The class is limited to 50 students, so call to pre-register at (352) 726 - 4380. Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the workshop.

Learn the basics and secrets of saltwater fishing in the Citrus County area. Subjects discussed will be: 2004 fishing regulations, geography of the rivers and waterways in relation to where the fish are; fish identification including size limits; techniques of how to catch all types of inshore and offshore species of fish; proper care of handling and releasing fish unharmed; proper equipment from tackle box to boats and motors.

Capt. Locklear has over thirty years of local fishing experience and is licensed by the United States Coast Guard. To keep updated on current issues and fishing techniques he subscribes to Woods and Waters Magazine, the International Game and Fish Association, Coastal Conservation Association, Florida Sportsman Magazine, Florida Wildlife Federation and is President of the Homosassa Guides Association.

There will be some free tackle given away for everyone by major fishing manufacturers and everyone will take home a packet of information that will include maps, tide tables, boat ramp locations, fishing knots, fishing laws and regulations, and fish identification pamphlets.

For more information and to pre-register, please contact Citrus County Parks and Recreation at 352-726-4380.

Best Regards and God Bless You,
