Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
January 24, 2005
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Freezing Weather Packs Fish Tight in Holes

Lately the fishing has been good for those willing to go out. Captain Mark Zorn went out this past week and caught his limit of trout in short order with his clients. Also, Capt. Ray Wallace did well with big trout fishing the Crystal River. They were all too big to keep except for one over the 20 inch mark per person. Folks the big ones are still out there waiting for another lucky angler to have fun with.

Capt. Charlie Harris caught himself dinner today. Harris said, “I got fish hungry and figured they would be a few out in the sun getting warm. There was one that ate a cherry.” I am sure he was talking fly fishing. One local angler reported quite a few reds in the skinny water flats tailing, all in the 24-26 inch range. Sight fishing for reds after three days of the front is awesome.

The Homosassa Fishing Forecast

February trout is out and sheepshead is in. March will feature tons of mudding trout, mackerel, blues and grouper. April the cobia will show up and the redfish will become the premier species along with a few trout threw in for color. May, the giant tarpon will arrive and stay through mid-July. May and June are by far the best two months for gulf tarpon. I have more good days opened now than this time last year and will have plenty until the last of February. When the warm weather hits, the phone rings off the hook. There are only 50-60 prime days, but just in case, keep me in mind, even if it is in May or June. You never know I might have a late cancellation. That is it for the fishing report; the rest is just about hunting and other personal interest.

Hunting Pheasants, Quail, and Ducks

I did get a little hunting in this winter. Shot a bunch of pheasant and quail up at Six Mile Preserve near Chiefland. It is a mighty fine place to relax with a new lodge just built. There are two more pheasant hunts coming up on Feb. 5 and March 5 and you can hunt quail up to March 15 if any of y’all are interested, let me know. That’s my new winter job is trying to help out my nephew. The 2500 acres they have is sure a nice spread.

Also, I went and did my annual duck hunting trip with an undertaker. Their motto is “we are the last you let you down.” Got him out of the dumps and he is wood carving a replica hooded merganser from the one he shot. Actually, he shot two along with two of his decoys. We had a lot of action. This was a honey do that I did not mind-my wife ordered me to do. This was more fun than steam cleaning the carpet. We gave the dog away, so it was a good thing to do, clean the carpet. It smells good in the house now.

Now and Then; The Kids Me & Dreaming TV

Give All Glory To The Lord

For two weeks this month I have been nursing a repaired knee and I had some minor surgery performed by the best surgeon in the world, Dr. Bill. I have been laid up until recently. My knee feels like it is getting well, but I have to be careful until February 1. I will be 50 this year, so this is some much needed repair even though my knee was not hurting at the time; we felt this would be a good move to remove some old cartilage.

This is the best time of year for me clean up the inside of the house, office and garage. I have to do my Spring cleaning in the winter, because I will not get a chance to do it this Spring. I painted my son’s room and a pretty angel helped me with the deer buck border.

The kids are in high school and have done well in school with all straight A’s so far. I have to brag a little. That is good stuff. I don’t want to act too proud just yet. The raising is not finished yet. The biggest challenge is yet to come. College. Cars. Jeeps. Insurance. If any of you have any yachts to be delivered I am in the business. Ever seen that business card where all things are bought and sold, tamed and captured. That’s going to be me.

Perhaps I will become a local TV personality. Ha Ha -It’s hard when the only station manager in town will not return my calls. Life is not fair.

Now, I am staying up to watch Jay Leno pay his tribute to the legend Johnny Carson. One person who knew him said he had a little devil in him, but a whole lot of angel. If you never knew him, you are too young to remember him well. He was the bar that measured the stars in show business.

Right now, I am listening to Paul, Sr. of American Chopper chew his sons’ out verbally while I write this journal. They can not get along. I would love to have him on my boat during tarpon season throwing bait at the giant Homosassa tarpon. In case you don’t have a clue, he is a Discovery Channel celebrity that has been building motorcycles for about 4 years with his two sons. They are big time in the real TV world. A little acting maybe in all the arguing, but if the shop is not clean, the big armed man really gets ticked. You have to understand, I have a 15-year old who has watched every single episode three times and we both have played and completed the American Chopper game on his Play Station 2. It is a lot more fun than pinball, once you learn the control console. I guess the theme is sort of like professional wrestling, not that Paul Sr. is faking, but when it comes to the dentist he becomes a big baby. It is great real life drama and I am sure when a motorcycle cost 40K or more the stress and high blood pressure are real.

If you read this far, you must really like me or your bored or you are snowed in or shut in. To my 60 or so loyal reader’s thanks for the good comments, it keeps me wanting to write. I feel like you are my extended family.

Bless you, reader this day and every day.

I in Christ, Christ in Me and You (always I hope)

Capt. Mike Locklear
