Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
February 4, 2005
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Learn To Catch Fish

A seminar is planned for this month. I will be conducting a 3-hour salt-water work shop. Learn the basics and a few secrets of saltwater fishing in the Citrus County area. Subjects discussed will be: 2005 fishing regulations, geography of the rivers and waterways in relation to where the fish are; fish identification including size limits; techniques of how to catch all types of inshore and offshore species of fish; proper care of handling and releasing fish unharmed; proper equipment from tackle box to boats and motors.

The workshop will take place on Tuesday, February 15, 2005, from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the Homosassa Lions Club. The cost is $25.00 per person. The class is limited to 50 students, so call to pre-register at (352) 726 - 4380. Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the workshop.

There will be some free tackle given away for everyone by major fishing manufacturers and everyone will take home a packet of information that will include maps, tide tables, boat ramp locations, fishing knots, fishing laws and regulations, and fish identification pamphlets.

Sheepshead Proved To Be Hungry

This past week has been chilly with little sunshine but all that is going to change for this upcoming weekend. Looks like clear skies are expected as a high pressure area moves across the eastern United States. A warming trend is expected through the middle of next week.

On a cloudy and chilly day, beginning February 1, me and the pastors of First Baptist Homosassa took out our special guest speaker, Royce Williams of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Bro. Royce taught us the book of Mark in five nights of intense reading and Power Point presentations. I learned a lot.

Royce took the lead with the first keeper sheepshead and before long both Alan Ritter and Chris Brewer had a nice sheepshead pulling their lines and putting a good bend in their rods. I think Alan caught the most as he ended up with three, two of which we tossed back. However, Royce did have the most keepers in the box with 2.

We had not been fishing very long before the rains came and we were not prepared for the cold weather, so we headed back in with 4 nice keepers in one hour of fishing. It is this time of year we get into nice sheepshead using fresh shrimp on the outside rocks of the Gulf of Mexico.

Back on hunting secne, the last weekend of duck season turned out to be a success for Bill Baumgartner who bagged his hen hooded Merganser. My son and I were also out and just enjoyed some time on the water together, but did not bag a duck. It did not matter.

Six Mile Preserve is offering daily guided quail hunting trips through March 13. Also, one Pheasant Shoot is scheduled for March 5. Anyone interested in hunting there should contact me for more information.

Lake Comedero Bass Action In Pretty Fair Numbers

Speaking of Mexico, plenty of excellent largemouth bass action is going on in Lake Comedero. If you are interested in trying this type of fishing, please contact me. I went there last year and enjoyed four days of fishing where Henry Morris and I landed over 210 bass. It is a more than a fishing trip it is an adventure packed with excitement.

Here are some catches reported from this week. The big ‘uns will be hitting soon.
