Homosassa Fishing Guides Clinic at AmSouth Bank Crystal River

On Friday February 18, members of the Homosassa Guides Association will be assembling to perform a free fishing clinic.

The fun and talks begin at 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mercury Outboards Salt Water Pro Team Captains Mike Locklear, Jim Long and Billy Henderson will appear. Also native guide, Ray Wallace Jr. and Woods/Waters Writer Capt. Ed Lewis will speak on various fishing specialties from their boats.

Come learn about fly fishing, light tackle angling, and boats/motors. The group has more than 50 years of local guide experience. Come join in on the fun.

This event is free and located on the AmSouth Bank parking lot at 6730 West Gulf to Lake in Crystal River. The bank’s location is better described as positioned along State Road 44 east of Crystal River about 2 miles, just past the intersection of County Road 486 on your south side.

Look for the guide boats under the AmSouth Bank sign.

Citrus County Parks and Recreation and Capt. Mike Locklear offers Salt Water Workshop

Two salt water workshops are planned for March the same day, one in the afternoon for the retirees and one in the evening for the working folks. Citrus County Parks and Recreation is my co-sponsor. I will be teaching the class alone unless a special guest comes to mind.

Learn the basics and a few secrets of saltwater fishing in the Citrus County area. Subjects discussed will be: 2005 fishing regulations, geography of the rivers and waterways in relation to where the fish are; fish identification including size limits; techniques of how to catch all types of inshore and offshore species of fish; proper care of handling and releasing fish unharmed; proper equipment from tackle box to boats and motors.

At the workshop there will be some free tackle given away for everyone by major fishing manufacturers and everyone will take home a packet of information that will include maps, tide tables, boat ramp locations, fishing knots, fishing laws and regulations, and fish identification pamphlets.

The workshops will take place on Tuesday, March 15, 2005, from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and from 6:00 P.M.- 8:00 P.M. at the Homosassa Lions Club. The cost is $25.00 per person. The class is limited to 50 students, so it is necessary to pre-register by calling (352) 726 - 4380. Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the workshop.

Homosassa Fishing Report

This past week has been warm with no rain but all that is going to change for this upcoming weekend. Looks like clear skies are expected as a cold front sweeps through on Friday. A slight warming trend is expected through the middle of next week.

This past Saturday we had a cool front come through and the winds were hard out of the northeast. I am expect the same will happen this Saturday. Most of the water will be blown out of the river and the flats. So watch for low tides.

Brian Baird of Ann Arbor, MI and his two brothers, James and Wayne boarded the Flatfisher 1 for some warm weather fishing. It was a beautiful day and a little chilly and way too windy for us to do any good out on the flats. Actually they caught about 20 porgies, a n undesirable pest when trying to catch the wiley sheepshead on the gulf coast rocks.

We came back into the river where we greeted Capt. William Toney. He and his party were catching a few fish. We went up the river from him and near Hells Gate, we began to catch nice size sheepshead and a few small mangrove snapper. The Bairds' were having a blast taking photos of every species we landed including a pinfish.

I could see that the brothers who have fished together most of their juvenile lives were enjoying themselves casting jigs and landing spotted seatrout and ladyfish.

It was a good day for them to remember and I thoroughly enjoyed it as well, being their guide as I did not wet a line. That is what you call true guiding
