Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Amsouth Bank host Mercury Outboards Pro Team

On Friday, February 18, members of the Homosassa Guides Association will be assembling to perform a free fishing clinic. The fun and talks begin at 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mercury Outboards Salt Water Pro Team Captains Mike Locklear, Jim Long and Billy Henderson will appear. Also native guide, Ray Wallace Jr. and Woods/Waters Writer Capt. Ed Lewis will speak on various fishing specialties from their boats. Come learn about fly fishing, light tackle angling, and boats/motors. The group has more than 50 years of local guide experience. Come join in on the fun. This event is free and located on the AmSouth Bank parking lot at 6730 West Gulf to Lake in Crystal River. The bank’s location is better described as positioned along State Road 44 east of Crystal River about 2 miles, just past the intersection of County Road 486 on your south side. Look for the guide boats under the AmSouth Bank sign.

Citrus County Parks and Recreation and Capt. Mike Locklear offers Salt Water Workshop

Two salt water workshops are planned for March the same day, one in the afternoon for the retirees and one in the evening for the working folks. Citrus County Parks and Recreation is my co-sponsor. I will be teaching the class alone unless a special guest comes to mind.

Learn the basics and a few secrets of saltwater fishing in the Citrus County area. Subjects discussed will be: 2005 fishing regulations, geography of the rivers and waterways in relation to where the fish are; fish identification including size limits; techniques of how to catch all types of inshore and offshore species of fish; proper care of handling and releasing fish unharmed; proper equipment from tackle box to boats and motors.

At the workshop there will be some free tackle given away for everyone by major fishing manufacturers and everyone will take home a packet of information that will include maps, tide tables, boat ramp locations, fishing knots, fishing laws and regulations, and fish identification pamphlets.

The workshops will take place on Tuesday, March 15, 2005, from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and from 6:00 P.M.- 8:00 P.M. at the Homosassa Lions Club. The cost is $25.00 per person. Each class is limited to 50 students, so it is necessary to pre-register by calling (352) 726 - 4380. Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the workshop.

Father/Daughter enjoy the Homosassa River

On Thursday, February 10 Jack Dewey, Homosassa and his daughter Donna Liotta of Chicago got together for a half day fishing trip on the Homosassa River aboard my 23 foot Tremblay. A northwester was laying the tree tops over as winds gust to 15 knots.

The first stop we managed to get anchored just right with the first try. Before long both Donna and Mr. Dewey began reeling in the fish pretty steady. All be it was little sugar trout and grey snapper.

A few minutes later Jack hooked into a bigger fish. I could tell he was an experienced angler as he let the fish fight the rod and not the reel. After a bit, about a 7-pound sheepshead came to the surface and I scooped it up with the landing net. We took some pictures and kept it for dinner.

The next cast Donna's rod became bent pretty well and she reeled in a nice spotted sea trout. A few pictures were taken and then it was released as it closed season on trout in February.

We tried a few more holes in the river and the little gray snapper would not leave us alone. They did not complain, in fact Donna said the little ones were fun, too.

Before it was over, Donna also hooked into a nice sheepshead of about 3 pounds. When you compare 15 degree weather in Chicago to our 50 here in Florida, the weather was quite pleasant for Donna, but I think Jack and I were a bit chilly.

One thing I did not know and learned from Donna, is that if you make your living on the computer, it is best to have a little rose tint into your glasses to block the glare.

Weather Synopsis

The weather for this week is predicted to have two cold fronts, one on Monday and another on Wednesday. Perhaps by next weekend, the winds and weather will be calmer and the seas quieter.
