The Search For Jessica Lunsford
Sad times and fears are felt here in Homosassa as nine year old Jessica Lunsford continues to be missing from her Grandfather’s house. Colder days now and rain yesterday has hampered the rescue effort from more than 500 volunteers.
As Mike Hampton offered some big money for information to lead to her rescue, the sheriff’s department has been pursuing every clue including viewing tapes from stores during the time of the missing persons report. One tape showed a girl that looked like Jessie, but it proved not to be her.
Duke Lane, Jr. of Ft. Valley Georgia called me yesterday and was very concerned about the young girl. Lane operates a peach and pecan orchid that employs hundreds of workers, mostly Mexicans. He’s not beyond bringing a hundred volunteers down here according to what he told me.
Perhaps the sheriff will get a break that he needs to find her, but for now all he can do is continue to look with volunteers that are assembled. This effort was extended this weekend to include a posse of over 500 volunteers. They have combed the area twice near her home and have now extended it to include nearby Withlacoochee State Forest commonly referred to as the Citrus Wildlife Management area.
ATV or 4-wheelers have been employed to help comb the forest as more than 50 vehicle operators searched on Sunday in rainy conditions. It was a miserable day. God only knows where this child is. The fear has been put into the homes of ones concerned with her disappearance.
