Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report
Cold Weather Makes Homosassa River Most Productive
While there are plenty of trout to catch in Homosassa Bay, the weather has not cooperated for the most part.
Yesterday, Cliff Hammer and his son David fished with me and David landed the first fish, a mangrove snapper. We rode up the river and saw perhaps 200 manatees soaking up the warm water from the Spring. Most of the fish we saw were hundreds of small silver mullet along with a few large snook and scattered sheepshead along the hard bottom of the river.
Most of the fish outside in the bay were cold as ice with water temps in the middle 50's. We could see the trout laying on the bottom and the water was so clear you could count the spots on their back. With windy conditions we rode back into the river where we caught our first and only keeper trout and about a half dozen that were too small to keep.
There was plenty to see in the river and Petty Creek as we saw a raccon feeding on the river bank. We also spotted two whooping cranes overhead, an eagle and dozens of white pelicans.
With the water temperature chilly and rain expected today with overcast skies, no one is out today that I know of. This weekend is suppose to be sunny.
