Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
April 28, 2005
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing has Me Hooked

The last several days Homosassa fishing has been very good.

Trout fishing was real good today for Barry Kaplan and his friend of 20 years; “Jeff the Golf Pro” who is the manager of Ocala Golf and Country Club. The pair met me at MacRae’s for a half day trip starting at 2:00 P.M. We went near Mangrove Point of the Suncoast Keys and found both trout and reds to be abundant.

Barry was the first to bring in a redfish, and then 3 more keeper trout as Jeff reeled in a 23 incher that was nearly 3 pounds. I got in on the action and landed a trout and then a redfish on the new Cajun Spin with two casts. This lure is a spinner bait with Bass Assassin jig and tail. The Electric Chicken color which is green and pink in Sea Shad which is a paddle tail. Lots of big pinfish ate our shrimp, so we switch to pinfish and nothing happening with that, so we switched back to artificial.

With only an hour left to fish, Barry wanted some redfish to blacken, so I first took him to his hole and then mine. We connected with 3 nice redfish in the 19 inch range plus threw back several 17 inch ones.

Yesterday, Kirk Wilson sent one of his suppliers and partner on an all day fishing trip which included a bag of 8 trout, two redfish, a sheepshead and a flounder, all on shrimp except the trout preferred Cajun Thunders.

On Tuesday, Capt. Bill Miller of the Hooked on Fishing TV show brought his camera man and Producer for some great trout action and a few redfish to boot. His show ran tonight and with our trip with non-stop action. The show ran live tonight on Bright House 47 and will encore on Sunday and Tuesday nights from 7-8 P.M.

The Chevy Florida Fishing Report is in its 4th week and was live tonight on Sun Sports Network. Remember to tune in between 7-8:30 P.M. and every Thursday night for the live version. The show will encore Friday 4/29 at 9:30 A.M. and 1:30 P.M. The final encore is on Saturday morning, 4/30 at 10:00 A.M. I hope you are fishing though, but the winds offshore are predicted to be 3-5 feet offshore. So, inshore fishing is the best bet for this weekend. Hey, it’s just an opinion. If you have big gonads and a big boat to battle the rough seas; go for it! Check out the show; it’s awesome and you can learn something as well as be entertained by the motley crew of the show.

Libby at Sea Hag Marina of Steinhatchee reported good offshore grouper action out at the humps and the crack. GPS numbers are available on their web site to these spots. Also check out the Gainesville Offshore Fishing Club at www.gofc.us for more GPS numbers to great grouper action.

Locally, Capt. Don Chancey of the Homosassa Guides Association has been doing very well with trolling up the gag groupers. Also Capt. Jim Long has hit a few inshore. Check out our web site for a group of great guides all licensed and insured.

All up and down the west coast charter captains are telling me that the big trout are in shallow water like 4-6 feet of water.

Jerk Baits, Top Dogs and Tsunamis are taking the big trout while average sizes fall prey to Cajun Thunder rigs.

In Keaton Beach, Capt. Pat McGriff tells me that Keaton Beach Fishing Report April 28- 29

“Seems lately the weather is the object of conversation rather than the fishing.

Can we get a break, or what? (I think he is talking to God here.)

It would be nice to get a few days to fish without having a 25 knot w-i-n-d thrown in to stir everything up so. Much less a weekend?

This week's warmer weather should greatly improve the trout bite with fish still expected to be holding in 4 - 5 feet on average. Between storms a few folks have caught some fish.

The trout are pretty much holding around 4 - 5 feet trying to commit to shallower water, yet afraid they will be disappointed and have to move back out again. It is hard to find a reliable "bite" inside of three-and-a-half feet of water.” Thanks, Capt. Pat for the report.

Locally redfish are cooperating as we have had nice ones up to 27 inches. They are starting to be more abundant along points of mangrove islands. We have caught some on the new Cajun Spin. Now that’s a new awesome bait. I caught a trout and redfish on two consecutive casts today and throwing in the same spot. Fish incoming tide if possible.

Last Friday and Saturday Jim Raines and Jo Gio Seffi fly fished for tarpon and had a few shots on Saturday before the storm. Jim caught a trout on the fly rod which was not a challenge using a 12 weight. The weekend was a time to rest for me and I relaxed on Sunday. Monday I went scouting and caught my limit of nice trout which tasted mighty fine as I cooked an inside shore dinner for my family.

Remember what Ernie Lee says, Get out there and go fishing if you can because it is goooood fer ya! And old Capt. Wilson Hubbard says if you are too busy to go fishing, you are just too darn busy.

Capt. Mike
