Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
September 1, 2005
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Two Georges Slam The Redfish in Homosassa Florida

Today after the 6 am news, I finished preparing my boat. Last night I could not find my key or the spare to the ball hitch lock on my trailer. Here it was almost dark and even the locksmith could not rescue me because he said he could not pick a Master lock. Since it was not a regular padlock it could not be easily cut off.

My son was my last hope. He is 15 and very good with tools and grinders. He is also smarter than me which is hard to admit. I told him I would pay him if he would find a way to cut the lock off without damaging my boat trailer. Within minutes he had the tongue unbolted off the trailer. Somehow with a grinder he cut the brass part of the rectangle shaped lock into a small square where the keyless cylinder laid.

His only comment was, “you know Dad; that metal is soft and does not even spark fire!”

I previously offered him $40, the least a locksmith would cost. After finishing, he said, “Can I have just a ten dollar bill? I said, sure, but take a twenty if you want. His response was no, that was all he needed to finish saving for his track bar on the Jeep. That’s my boy!

After washing the boat and leaving the house it was now 7:00 am and I still needed to top off both my truck and boat due to the new gas crunch. There were reports of fuel being scarce, so I have enough to get through Labor Day Weekend.

George Hambos and George Marquette of the Tampa Bay area joined me at MacRae’s at 8:00 am. They are repeat customers who have fished with me for 10 years. George bought his own boat to fish, so it has been a while since they had fished with me.

Winds were west at 10 mph. Rain clouds were all around us and we saw a waterspout while catching 8 redfish at the first stop. We moved to another location and both Georges’ landed our keepers in the 22 inch range.

Like the splitting of the Red Sea, rain went around us on both sides and at one point got a little too close as one cloud looked very black and George M. was uncomfortable. “O ye of little faith.” George was paying the tab, so we moved again. This time the tide was near perfect and they began catching redfish with double hook-ups. At least 30 were caught and released and the biggest about 5 pounds.

Every stop except the last one produced for us. I marked that spot as unproductive in my log. It was a great trip, but they were disappointed their friend Tito, the Immigrations Officer, could not have been with us.

So at their urging I rubbed it in a little harder on Tito and mentioned the catch on tonight’s live show, the Chevy Florida Fishing Report. If you want to see the reruns; go to sunsportstv.com for the TV schedule and while you are there view the hot spots as well as reputable fishing guides throughout the state.

I will close with Katrina’s victims, they need some help and the best way including a prayer is to send your extra money to the Red Cross at 1-800-HELP-NOW
