Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
March 30, 2007
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

More East Wind

Homosassa’s weather forecast called for 5-10 miles per hour today. However, 15 mile per hour winds out of the east with cloudy skies plagued us again. Captains Jim Long, Ray Wallace Jr., Fred Lyles and I prepared to take the Vulcan crew out of Asheville out to the flats for a day of fishing fun.

We were all headed out to the old Bombing Range where round holes are scattered from live ammunition practice back in WW II. The depths we were going out to were only 6 to 8 feet of water and 6 miles is about the distance off land to travel. One foot to a mile is the drop rate for a long ways out.

As a group we landed anglers limits of spotted seatrout. We had to work hard for them scrapping one out now and then. That is 60 nice trout per day we kept for the group of 12. Sizes were average with most in the 16-17 inch range along with a scattering of 20-inch trout.

East winds kept up all day blowing away the water and any great chance of scoring big on the redfish. All our guide boats float in less than a foot of water, but you can rip your lower unit right off the boat even if you are experienced.

Along with the trout were numerous mackerel and bluefish. We used jigs on the bottom while drifting. Power Baits or Gulp, Bass Assassins in white 5-inch with ¼ ounce jig heads were the standard rig. Many cast were made and after a while we decided to slow the pace and just free line some live shrimp.

I anchored near a rock and started chumming with small pieces of shrimp. We need 5 more trout to finish out our limit of 15. Dennis and James helped finish it out, but all Stroupe could catch was little pussy catfish, mackerel and several ladyfish. Stroupe did manage to land the only redfish.

It was fun for all and we look forward to having them back for next year’s outing.
