Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
May 11, 2007
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Big Cobia Caught-Tarpon Elusive

May 1st started out strong with Capt. Bill Miller of “Hooked On Fishing” TV show and Mickey Smith of Oak Hill hospital. Sometimes the pressure gets intense when the cameras are rolling especially if the catching is slow.

My plan was to wax some reef pelagics on the first stop. Seas were calm and the tide was coming in on a shrimp boat wreck about 9 miles out. I got broke off by a big fish or so I thought and then Bill landed a nice jack on a top dog MirrOlure. Then the wreck produced nothing.

We headed back inshore and went to the Suncoast Keys to do some redfishing. We saw some big ‘uns but we could not feed one. They were wild and uncooperative.

With the tide rolling in strong, I decided to see if some trout were hanging on a rock bar just off one of the keys. Yep—they were there and both Bill and Mickey put a few in the box.

With the day about shot and the show in question, I planned on hitting the honey hole of all holes. If the reds were not biting here, then the camera jinx was in effect.

Mickey started reeling in red after red and some were in the upper slot. Bill and the camera guy were busy doing promos for Catch 47, a Bright House network affiliated with Bay News 9 out of Pinellas Park. The day was saved and Mickey made the show successful in the catching department.

There were several nice catches of cobia this past week with Capt. Leo Riddle landing a 52-pound cobia and an unknown fisherman brought in a 62 pound cobia to MacRae’s Bait House. Capt. Mark Zorn highlighted my picture gallery this week with a nice 40-pound cobia.

Please go to my picture gallery to see what else was caught.

Tarpon have been tearing it up south of us in Tampa Bay but around here the action is nil. Nada. A cold front has delayed the arrival of our Homosassa poons.
