Summer in the Old City!!!

Capt. "Red Ed" Brennan
May 29, 2012
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer in the Old City!!!

Fishing in Homosassa in the summer is a plethora of opportunities. With Summer-time tides, gin clear waters and usually beautiful weather, (minus Beryl); it's a great time to experience some of the best fishing of the year. Tarpon Fever has officially taken over here on Florida's Nature Coast. The famous flats South of Chassahowitzka Point are covered with poling skiffs, stealthily chasing the Silver Kings. Inshore fishing for Redfish is still "RED" hot with many fish over the 27 inch slot limit. Live shrimp, cut Ladyfish or Pinfish are still the baits of choice for battling the "Bronze Bruisers"! I prefer to fish the outside edges of mangrove islands, rocky points and oyster bars on an incoming tide when hunting for Reds. With the Gulf water temperatures now over 80 degrees, the Speckled Sea Trout have moved further off-shore to deeper more consistent temperatures then on the shallow water flats. Soft MirrOlures, either the 5 inch Provoker or the Lil John behind a Cajun Thunder has been the ticket for the "Yellow-mouths" head shaking fun. Don't be surprised as you drift over the rock piles offshore to pick up some tasty eating Sea Bass. Plus you never know when a Grouper has decided to make those same rocks home. Also keep a sharp eye for any Stingrays or Turtles as Cobia will be riding on their backs looking for an easy meal. All of these species can make for an exciting unforgettable day on the water. Take advantage of our "Introductory Offer", the first time you fish with me, it's only $299.00 for a full day charter for one to four anglers and includes everything except your lunch, beverages and gratuity. Check our web-site, www.HomosassaRedfish.com, for more details or to reserve your date. The "Introductory Offer" is NOT available during Scallop Season, so June will be the last month to take advantage of this incredible offer until Scallop Season has ended. Let's go CATCHING, Captain Red ED

Scallop Season opens July 1st and runs through September 10th! Scallop season here on Florida's Nature Coast is one of the most exciting and busiest times of the year. Book your Scallop charters soon at, www.HomosassaRedfish.com, as most of the prime dates in July are already booked. Due to popular demand and to the fact that we have already booked so many Scallop Charters, we will be running a second boat this season, a 24 foot Privateer T-top, with a Yamaha 150 HP 4-Stroke Engine. Don't wait as we expect to fill both boats! We hope for another banner season this year! It's like an "Underwater Easter Egg Hunt"!!

Speaking Engagements

Saturday, June 16, 2012, I'll be with the "Three Amigos", BooDreaux, Steve Chapman and Captain Mike Ortego, on The Fishing Florida Radio Show in Orlando, from 6 to 9 AM, broadcast in the Central Florida area on 740 AM - The Game. Or you can listen on-line at www.fishingfloirdaradio.com, click on Listen Live. If you'd like to call in and talk some fishing the toll free number is 800-729-8255 or locally try 407-916-8255. It would be great to hear from my Orlando/Central Florida area friends!

As I mentioned in my last couple of reports, I have recently ordered a new boat from Young Boats in Inglis, www.Young-Boats.com. Well, I've changed my mind and have decided to go with the Young 24 instead of the Young 20. The Young 24 is a state-of-the-art, computer designed ultra-high performance hull based on Young's signature "Reverse Sheer™" line. This center console with a dual station tower comes with a high bow, high freeboard and shallow draft; the Young 24 is ideally designed for both inshore waterways and offshore rough seas. Standard features on the Young 24 include four large bait wells, front and rear pedestal seat bases, deluxe leaning post with rod holders and ample rod storage. Some of the options include a head compartment in the console, custom T-top and tower, expected delivery date is mid-September. This new dream boat will open up many other fishing opportunities that I'm just not able to do with my 24 foot Carolina Skiff. Help me name the new Young Boat, between now and the end of June, please send your suggestions to [email protected]. Some of the interesting suggestions we have already received are: Red Ed's Sled, Ankle Deep, Homosassa Hooker, Red Rules, and Red-Eddie or Knot. If your boat name suggestion is chosen, you will receive one FREE Scallop Charter for up to four folks!

The recreational harvest of Snook in Atlantic state and federal waters and of greater Amberjack in Gulf of Mexico state and federal waters closes June 1.

Snook will reopen for harvest in Atlantic federal, state and inland waters, including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River, Sept. 1. Snook remains closed for harvest in Gulf of Mexico state waters including Everglades National Park and Monroe County through Aug. 31. A stock assessment on Snook will be presented to the FWC Commission at its June 27-28 meeting in West Palm Beach.

Greater Amberjack will reopen for harvest in Gulf of Mexico state and federal waters Aug. 1.

State waters in the Atlantic extend from shore to three nautical miles and in the Gulf from shore to nine nautical miles.

Seasonal harvest closures protect Florida's valuable Snook and greater Amberjack populations and help sustain and improve the fishery for the future.

The 2012 Gulf of Mexico Red Snapper recreational harvest season begins June 1 in state and federal waters. The last day of the 40-day season is July 10.
