This Weeks Fishing Report
Well, our second substantial cold front arrived in Central Florida on Thursday cooling things down just in time for the 3rd Annual Shad and Crappie Derby Crappie Rally held yesterday at the Boat Tree Marina in Sanford. Despite the chill, the event was a huge success with 63 anglers signing up and enjoying the free seminars and lunch. The event raffle was an additional success story, raising 211.00 for the Hook Kids on fishing program. All in all it was great fun and I'm already looking forward to the Shad Rally at the Jolly Gator Fish Camp on February 25th.
On the St Johns River, the cooler water temperatures have got the fish chewing. On Friday, I had the pleasure of spending some time catching specks and shad on the stretch of river between the Jolly Gator Fish Camp and Lake Harney. Joined by my good friends Tadd and Larry, we landed over 25 specks and 6 shad slow trolling 1/16 ounce white Road Runners. On Saturday at the Crappie Rally we experienced the same level of action on a totally different part of the river.
On the Lagoons, the water temperatures are cooling as well, reaching 57 degrees this weekend. The water levels are dropping and the dissolved oxygen and salinity are increasing. All of the factors add up to better sight fishing conditions, so look for happy and hungry fish this week. Also as the seas settle, look for the cobia on the wrecks and kingfish on 8A and Pelican flats.
As always, if you have any questions or need information, please contact me.
Good luck and good fishing,
Captain Tom Van Horn
