This Week's Fishing Report

If you haven't heard the news, it's freezing down here in the sunshine state and across the nation, so there's no fishing for me today. This cold snap will push all of the fish off of the flats into deeper holes for a few days, but remember like us, fish still have to eat. The only difference is as a cold blooded species, they require less energy to survive, so they move slowly, eat less, and they eat smaller prey that is easier to catch like crabs and shrimp.

In a few days when the wind stops blowing and we warm up a degree or two they will raid the flats in an effort the fill the void in their stomach before the next front approaches

Before we experienced this dip in the weather, the fishing on the lagoon was pretty good. The sea trout bite was still off the hook, and we experienced an awesome redfish bite.

On one trip I had the honor of fishing with the Kim family from Orlando, and the challenge of putting the kids, Carter and Grayson on their first redfish. Both Carter and Grayson were excellent anglers for their age, but I had difficulty locating fish at first. They were both accomplished bass anglers, but all Carter wanted was to catch a big redfish. Well, after losing his first big redfish boat side, he accomplished his goal, and the day was saved. Oh by the way, Grayson also scored with a nice redfish and some nice sea trout to boot.

As always, if you need information or have any questions, please contact me.

Good luck and good fishing,

Captain Tom Van Horn
