This Week's Report
As many of my blog followers know, I've been out of service for the past few months due to an extended repair to my 17 year old Maverick Master Angler "Three Quarter Time". Several months back, her fuel tank started leaking and I was torn between retiring my Maverick and purchase a new boat. Let's see, no boat payments or invest 40 K on a new boat, easy decision, fix the Maverick. Well, the repair job is finished and we are back on the water in business again.
For the heck of it, before I made my decision to repair my skiff I contacted my insurance carrier (Charter Lakes Insurance) and after sending out a surveyor, they ended up covering the cost to remove and replace the deck and to repair and refinish the deck which was about two-thirds of the coast. I had to have a new fuel tank fabricated and replace all of the old fuel components. While I was at it, I replaced the old trolling motor with a Minn Kota I-Pilot and Talon anchor, new batteries and new electrical wiring. I also added Seadeck in the cockpit and new carpet in the rod racks and had a rebuild on the trailer. All in all, it took longer than I anticipated to complete, but I think it was worth the wait.
This past week before the most recent front passed, the redfish bite was on in the Indian River Lagoon. The water levels were still high, which is normal for this year, and the water clarity has greatly improved in all of the area I covered last week. On just about every flat I scouted I found fish, but most had their noses buried in the grass up close to the shoreline, and many would not eat.
Today, a passing front has kicked up the wind from the northwest, but the wind is forecasted to settle down to about 5 to 10 knots on Sunday and then kick up again for the early part of next week. Also, the water temperature has dropped into the 50's, so start looking for the sea trout in the deeper winter holes where the water temperature is a degree or two warmer. It is also time to downsize your leader and you lure size and use shrimp and crab imitation baits like the DOA Shrimp or crab with a Woodies Rattle inserted.
As always, if you need more information or have questions please contact me.
Good luck and good fishing,
Captain Tom Van Horn
